Municipality of Doxato

The Municipality of Doxato is a municipality in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, established in 2011 under the Kallikratis Program. It was formed through the merger of the former municipalities of Doxato and Kalampaki. The municipality covers an area of 244.1 square kilometers, and its permanent population is 12,059 residents according to the 2021 census. The administrative seat of the municipality is Kalampaki, while its historical seat is Doxato.

The Municipality of Doxato consists of 2 “municipal units,” which correspond to the 2 merged municipalities. Each municipal unit is divided into “communities,” which correspond to the districts of the abolished local authorities (OTAs). The present-day communities of the municipality were independent communities and municipalities before the implementation of the Kapodistrias Program.

Municipal Unit of Doxato
The Municipal Unit of Doxato constituted the entire municipality before its merger under the Kallikratis Program. It covers an area of 162,336 stremmata and had a population of 7,568 residents according to the 2021 census.

The former Municipality of Doxato, with its seat in the settlement of Vathysilo of the former Municipality of Megalos Alexandros, consisted of the former Municipality of Megalos Alexandros (which originated from the voluntary merger of the communities of Kyrgia, Pigiadia, and Agora), the former Municipality of Doxato, and the former communities of Agios Athanasios and Kefalari.

Municipal Unit of Kalampaki
The former municipality and current Municipal Unit of Kalampaki had a population of 4,491 residents according to the 2021 census and covers an area of 81 square kilometers. It was established in 1997 under the Kapodistrias Program through the merger of older communities of the area, which later became the municipal districts of the municipality. It operated from 1999 to 2010, when it was abolished under the Kallikratis Program and incorporated into the new municipality. It was located in the southernmost part of the regional unit. It included five municipal districts and had its seat in Kalampaki.
